SOME SUGGESTIONS OF THINGS YOU CAN DO AT HOME WITH YOUR CHILD
- Regularly share books together, be a role model reader to encourage a love of reading
- Ask questions about what you have read. Talk about the pictures or any personal experiences you have as a family relating to the book
- Visit the local library regularly
- Learn a variety of nursery rhymes and songs
- Engage in conversations: get down to their level and give eye contact as you talk about daily experiences and respond to their questions
- Help them to hold a pencil and provide a variety of paper and mark making materials to make marks and talk about what they have drawn - the mark will often tell a story
- Praise and encourage their early efforts at drawing and communicating
- Play board games to help with counting, turn-taking and managing big emotions relating to winning and losing
- Learn emotional language to help talk about and manage emotions
- Look for different numbers in everyday situations: house and bus numbers
- Encourage your child to become independent; dressing, toileting
- Help them to use a knife, ford and spoon correctly ready for having lunch at nursery.
