Year 6 pupils enjoy inspiring visit to 10 Downing Street

Our year 6 pupils recently enjoyed an unforgettable educational visit to the heart of British government, spending a remarkable day exploring some of London’s most iconic landmarks.

Travelling by train to Charing Cross, the children began their adventure with a walk through central London. Passing through the bustling streets, they took in the sights of Trafalgar Square before arriving at one of the nation’s most recognisable addresses: 10 Downing Street.

A particularly special welcome awaited them at the famous black door, where they were greeted by Larry, the well-known Chief Mouser to the Cabinet Office, who was relaxing outside alongside the ever-present members of the press.

Led by expert guides Ben and Andrew, pupils embarked on an engaging and informative tour of the historic residence. They learned about the rich history of 10 Downing Street, its significance as the home of the British Prime Minister, and the important role it continues to play in the life of the nation. The children explored many of the building’s most famous rooms, each filled with stories from Britain’s political past.

Among the highlights of the day was the rare opportunity to sit in the Prime Minister’s seat in the Cabinet Room. Pupils also enjoyed lunch in one of the building’s formal dining rooms, adding an extra touch of occasion to an already memorable day.

Hear from our pupils:

Sla D. enthusiastically shared,

“The experience was fantastic! The opportunity to sit on the chair that so many past and of course, the present Prime Ministers have sat in was a once in-a lifetime chance!”

Izzy B. was equally captivated by the unique artefacts on display:

“We saw Larry, the No. 10 cat, held a solid gold breadbasket, saw moon rock collected by Neil Armstrong and felt Winston Churchill’s actual reading chair. The whole day was truly magnificent!”

For Tim W., the excitement began before even stepping inside:

“Standing in front of the iconic black door was great but then getting to actually walk through it was amazing!”

The visit also sparked future ambitions. Sunil S. reflected,

“Overall, the day has really inspired me, as I think it would be really cool to work there.”

Matei S. particularly enjoyed uncovering the building’s fascinating past:

“My favourite part of visiting 10 Downing Street was discovering the history of how it was built and then became home to British Prime Ministers through history. For me, it was completely full of surprises!”

After the visit, the group took a scenic walk back along Victoria Embankment Gardens, where they paused to admire the many monuments and the vibrant spring tulips in bloom. The return journey offered a perfect opportunity to reflect on a day filled with discovery, inspiration and wonder.

The visit was accompanied by members of staff Helen Pearson, Joanne Morris and Gemma Smee, whose support helped make the day such a success. The school was also delighted to be joined by parent governor Sarah Conneally, whose involvement added further value to this special experience.

This exceptional trip successfully combined history, citizenship and an appreciation of London’s rich heritage. For the Year 6 pupils, it was an educational experience they will remember for many years to come.
