Home learning:
We firmly believe that the partnership between home and school is paramount in enabling your child/ren to fulfil their potential and we ask our families to support their child’s learning through the completion of home learning tasks.
Home learning is set in order to encourage pupils to develop the skills, motivation, self-discipline and confidence required to study effectively as independent and life-long learners. Home learning also provides opportunities for the involvement of parents/carers in their child’s education, keeping them informed about their children’s learning at school.
We also firmly believe that family time is invaluable and that children’s learning goes way beyond the school gates. With this in mind we have reviewed our homework expectations and an updated policy can be found on the school websites.
Achieving the right balance of home learning set is difficult as families have their own expectations for what they deem an acceptable amount. To overcome this and continue to ensure our high expectations for the children’s attainment, we have adapted our home learning policy as follows:
Children will be expected to complete the following core home learning activities:
Key Stage Two Core activities (years 3 – 6):
- Learn a set of spellings for a weekly test
- Read daily from a selection of books and record their reading in their reading record book.
- Learn their times tables
For families who wish to complete additional learning activities with their child, the following optional activities will be available:
KS2 Optional additional activities:
- Times Table and Vocab Apps- information and logins for these will be sent out separately
- developing your child’s experiences and life skills through visits to museums and places of interest, researching school topics or topics of interest, visiting the library, making models and games, playing board games, drawing maps and plans, taking photographs etc.
The optional additional activities will provide open access to these educational programs for children to access as many activities as they would like. Home learning will not be provided for children who miss schooling due to a holiday. Parents/ Carers may wish to ask their child/ren to complete a holiday diary should they wish to.
During school holidays, children are expected to continue with the core home learning tasks and can access the optional tasks at their choice. No additional home learning tasks will be set for school holidays.
Home learning activities should be an enjoyable experience for families. If you have any queries or concerns regarding your child completing the core home learning tasks, please speak to your child’s class teacher.
Spelling
For spellings children will be given a spelling sheet at the start of each half term – spellings will need to be learnt weekly and will be tested on the Friday of each week. Children can practice their spellings online at home at: https://spellingframe.co.uk/ all they need is the rule for that week (stated on their spelling sheet) and they can find the games to play.
Reading
Your child will bring home a reading book based on our Accelerated Reader scheme (information below). Please encourage your child to read at home as much as they can. Please could you listen to your child read, discuss the book with them as well as ask questions to help build their comprehension skills. Please indicate in their reading record when they have read.
Children are asked to read at home 5 times a week. An adult will check and initial their reading record every day but the children are encouraged to change their book themselves. Any parent notes can also be written into the diary and the teacher will be able to read and respond to these.
Below is a suggested reading list to support you and your child’s decision on what books to read. We encourage children to read a range of text and promote enjoyment of reading.

Working together
At the Bedonwell Federation we are passionate about working as a team with parents and carers to support the learning and wellbeing of every child. If you have any questions, queries or information that you wish to discuss with us, please do not hesitate to speak to your child’s class teacher or the Head of Year. You can leave a message at the school office, write a note in your child’s reading journal or speak to the member of staff at the end of the school day.
We look forward to working with you and your child this year.
